Anticipating troubles from the Opposition and friends-turned-foes, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday appealed all parties to let Parliament function.
Addressing media minutes before the resumption of Budget Session of Parliament, Singh said, “It is my sincere request to all members of this House to let Parliament function. We have been put in this position to deliver certain goods.”
“This is a very important part of the Budget Session. There are important bills like land acquisition and my wish is that House should function. We are ready for debate. My request is that let the government function. We have been put in this position by people of India to deliver, so parties must cooperate. I am very confident that finance bill will be passed,” he said.
“I am confident that financial business will be transacted to our satisfaction,” the prime minister said in reply to a question.
The Opposition, as well as Congress’s former ally DMK and Samajwadi Party (SP), which is supporting the UPA government from outside, were all set to corner the government in Parliament, which resumes after a recess, over the issues of “deliberate leak” of draft report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on 2G spectrum allocation scam and the alleged vetting by the law ministry of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report on coal scam.
