New Delhi, Jul 7: Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council (NAC) cracked whip at Manmohan Singh government and urged it to fast-track two important anti-corruption bills.

Well-known social activist and Magsaysay Award winner Aruna Roy, who is also a key member of NAC, sent a letter to the Congress President blaming the government for not being serious about issues of accountability and corruption.

The Whistleblower Protection Bill and Grievance Redressal Protection Bill – were the two bills which got more attention in the letter written by Ms Roy.

In her letter to Mrs Gandhi, Ms Roy said, “Despite RTI users and activists being attacked and even killed at regular intervals, the Whistleblower protection bill remains stuck in the Rajya Sabha, after having been passed by the Lok Sabha.”

“We hope the UPA government will immediately ensure the passage of these two potentially landmark legislation,” added Ms Roy in her letter.

According to Ms Roy, Grievance Redressal Bill is a key for the enforcement and protection of the Right to Information Act (RTI).

Clarifying NAC’s stand on the issue, Ms Roy also claimed, “Many of us have already testified before the Standing Committee and offered our suggestions. We now hope that this issue will be afforded immediate priority and this most important piece of legislation be brought to parliament for passage in the monsoon session.”
