Cabinet reshuffle likely as Rahul Gandhi hints at shouldering bigger role for Congress

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh might reshuffle his Cabinet by the first week of August, sources told Headlines Today on Thursday.

According to sources, the Cabinet reshuffle might happen between July 26 and August 7. They said there is window for portfolio reallocation after the presidential poll result, but before the monsoon session of Parliament, which begins on August 8.

The UPA’s candidate for presidential poll, Pranab Mukherjee, had resigned as finance minister to contest the election and the prime minister has retained the portfolio, which now might go to Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said he was open to taking a larger role in the organisation.

He, however, left it on the Congress leadership and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take a decision on his new role.

“I will play more active role in the party and the government. The final decision is up to the Congress leadership,” he told Headlines Today.

This is the first time Rahul Gandhi has himself said that he would play a bigger role in the party and the government. He also said that the decision has and it needs to be implemented now.
